I am an advocate for the Elderly (Ombudsman) appointed by the Governor. Every state has a Dept of Elders and Ombudsman to look after our seniors’ welfare in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and family care homes. This past week we had the first of Town Hall meetings to inform the public of what we are about and to recruit more volunteers. It is a rewarding experience although sad in lots of instances but we are looking out for someone’s mother, father, grandparent, aunt, cousin. We don’t know what tomorrow has in store for any of us and I personally hope someone will be looking out for my best interests in the event I become a resident.
It is so easy to say you don’t have the time but in reality if you have 20 hours a month you can be a volunteer and love yourself in return. You are meeting other Ombudsman, helping your community and its citizens and rewarding yourself for giving to others. Try it! I can almost guarantee you will not have any regrets. I have been an Ombudsman for four years and plan to do it for another ten.
