On Wednesdays I spend five hours volunteering with my favorite 18 five to six year old children. The first part of the day we work with one teacher for writing, story time, learning the day and month and one child posting it on the calendar. After lunch another teacher takes over and we do some basic beginning numbers and sight words. It it amazing how much patience I have and the joy it gives me when they understand. Maybe it is because my time and energies are for their benefit and my smiling attitude bonds with their personalities. Some of these children were not in a pre-school or daycare program. Therefore, are being exposed for the first time to rules, respect and listening to orders. Just sitting in their chair for a few minutes or not talking while someone is talking- is a problem. If they don’t do their work or behave, they do not have recess or have special privileges that day. Their eyes fill with tears. We try to explain nicely while handing them a tissue why this is necessary and maybe tomorrow will be better if they follow the rules. With a sniff and a quick wipe with the crumpled tissue they are ready for anything. They are like sponges and their minds are amazing.
It is a challenge to see them develop each day. These are our future men and Ladies, and I am proud to be a part of their beginning. We need more volunteers to share in this endeavor. Call your school today.
