Happy Birthday America

By now, most of us are recuperating from good food, picnics, bar -b-q’s, family get together and lots of firework displays.  I opted for the home in front of my television set for my fireworks and entertainment.  At eight p.m. I watched A night at the Capital that hosted Barry Manilow along with a heartwarming message from our President of the United States, Barack Obama.  Barry somehow knows ” how to please his audience”,  as he sang a few favorites and his own brand new composition of “Let Freedom Ring”.  The lyrics reminded us of how lucky we are to be living in the U.S.A.

At 9 p.m.  it was the Macy’s Fireworks show that transported me ( if only for fifteen or so minutes) back to New York amongst the throngs of people awaiting the firework extravaganza.   The Philharmonic Orchestra played “Rhapsody in Blue”  to perfection.  I recall my sister Jo, playing the long playing record over and over and I think she discovered her love for classical music after hearing this beautiful presentation.

Onwards to 10 p.m. and my annual watching of the Boston Pops celebrated with Jimmy Smits hosting guest stars and the magnificent display of fireworks ended my fourth of July with smile on my face and in my heart.

I, too, opted for staying home and enjoying the peace and quiet. No TV, but a nice kayak on the lake was spectacular.

That sounds “awesome”, and something I have never done. Think I will put on my wish list.
