How Exercise Enhances Our Voice

Who knew that my taking yoga classes and learning to breathe correctly in through the nose and out through the nose would benefit in learning how to give air to our voice.  The quote given to me goes like this “Air to the voice, is what gasoline is to an automobile”.  My Pilate’s practice has enhanced my posture and strengthened my abdominal muscles, which must be activated by feeding more air across the vocal chords, causingthe sound produced to become louder.  I am already two steps ahead of the person that has not practices yoga or Pilate’s the instructor informed me.

We then went on find my key signatures by having me sing the scales DO RE ME FA SO and then backwards FA ME RE DO.  My number 1 signature would be E .  For my homework I will be singing Mary Had A Little Lamb while practicing breathing exercises and enunciation.  Maybe I can practice for my kindergarten children.  I am sure they will love it!

Free Bone Medicine

I have been told time and again about the benefits of taking Vitamin D to keep our bones strong.  In the past few years I have taken a Vitamin D supplement daily and ate a cup of yogurt faithfully.  I would also nibble on 1 or 2 slices of cheese but somehow cut back on drinking fortified milk.  While sitting outside today in the beautiful sunshine (which I love) I browsed through my latest issues of magazines and my one copy of a health and fitness edition.  One of their featured articles was how Vitamin D can benefit our bodies by trying to keep our skin protected with sunscreen at all times  except for twice a week- when we should take advantage of direct sun for 10-15 or so minutes. Also eating fish (salmon) is extremely beneficial and yes drinking milk fortified with Vitamin D.  It goes on to say how our bodies react favorably to high levels of Vitamin D and how it can cut the risk of developing type a diabetes by one third.  Our bones thrive on Vitamin D as it can also minimize the pain from osteoarthritis.   I found this to be lucrative information and wanted to share it with you.  Somehow that lucky old sun has lots of benefits besides feeling and looking good.

Learning the Words

I am so excited about taking singing lessons that I have compiled a list of songs that I have enjoyed the past years and hope to be able to sing myself.  I find myself humming more and listening to a variety of radio stations to decide on one particular style.  With practice,  I can probably try many styles to suit my voice and then let it boom!  My sons are thrilled that their Mom has found another venue to try and they are backing me 100%.  We shall see how I do this coming Saturday.

Sing a Song or Two

My sister reminded me when I mentioned how much I enjoy singing, that I did that for a penny or two when I was only five or six, I would sing for the neighbors to earn money to buy penny candy (giving away my age) but it was fun.  Today, I still sing along with the radio and surprise myself when I remember most of the words of songs from years back.  And so when they opened a brand new music store right next to the Fusion Fit Club, I decided this might be another hobby for Ms Millie and another check mark on my wish list.

With this idea in mind, I entered the store and asked “what do you do in here?”.  The woman behind the counter smiled and gave me the list of instruments they teach and also an art class and voice lessons.  That made me grin as I questioned  if it was possible if I only could (or so I thought) carry a tune?  She explained further about technique and set me up for a consultation with the voice teacher.  I was so excited and decided if I had to sing a song I would sing “Blow Me a Kiss” as I knew all the words.  On Saturday, I met with Crystal who filled me in on her qualifications and asked what type of singing and music did I prefer. I went on to say I loved old romantic tunes when she decided it was time for her to hear me sing.  I started singing my song and remembered only four lines.  My mind registered test and the rest of the song escaped me.  Crystal promised I would remember all of the words once I left the store, but she was able to derive that I am an alto with 2nd soprano pitch and I do have tone.  So I am going to start a six week 45 minutes class next Saturday. Who knows, I just might be on the Senior American Idol some day!!

By the way, I did remember all of the words to my song driving home.

Oscar Weekend

I love the Academy Awards with all the glitter and fashion.  I have always imagined that to walk on the famous red carpet and know the whole world is watching you must be awesome.  I remember my family and I  would make scorecards with our choices for winners in each category and see who scored the most right.  I recall  one year I was soooooo mad that the film “Marty” had won. (at that time I thought it was the dumbest movie ever).  The year of the telecast was 1954 or 1955 (not sure) but my bet was “Love is a Many Splendid Thing” and till today- it is one of my all time favorites.

This year I will have to accept their choices as the best until I find the time to see the featured films.  In any event It still should be an enjoyable evening with all the fanfare.  Do you have your picks-favorites?
